SQUEEZE IN A READ!! This week at Scoil San Eoin

SQUEEZE IN A READ!!

Irish libraries, Children’s Books Ireland, NALA, booksellers and others are partnering once again to get the whole country reading this month in the lead up to Ireland Reads Day on Saturday, 25th of February.

We are asking everyone to pledge to ‘squeeze in a read’ – whether that’s reading a book, a newspaper, a comic – whatever works grabs your interest!

We have made a pledge as a school that all pupils from 1st – 6th class will read for 15 minutes per day, each afternoon between 2pm and 3pm, commencing from Tuesday 21st to Fri 24th Feb and will encourage all parents and pupils to also read for at least 15 minutes on Sat 25th as well as part of the initiative above.

Please take some pictures over the next few days of your child and family reading and send them to us on our email @ schoolofficeredcross@gmail.com before Monday 27th Feb to allow us to send these on and share them on our website

Some information on access to books below:

  • Library members can borrow from 12 million items or download from thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and newspapers online. Simply visit www.librariesireland.ie to join.

  • You can browse and borrow in your local library or browse and reserve online. They also have thousands of ebooks, audiobooks and online newspapers and magazines available to download straight to your device.

  • Please also consider supporting your local bookshop.

We are asking all parents and pupils/family members to take part in the above initiative and share it with us.

 Thank You

Grandparents Day

What a special day we had for Grandparents Day! We had lots of VIPs turn up to interact with the pupils today, tell them about their time in school and mingle with some old friends. Today also gave the pupils an opportunity to show the Grandparents how they learn now, and how we use all of the ‘mod cons’ in our teaching and learning in the classroom. Grandparents also got a nice cup of tea and some artwork to bring home with them as a memento. Many thanks to all that helped out, sent in photos, baked and came in to help on the day. We are already looking forward to the next one!

Food Dudes Program (W/C 11th-15th March)

Dear Parent/Guardian,

This week at Scoil San Eoin your child/children will be participating in the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme, which aims to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables.

Previously we have participated in a 8 days/16 days Food Dudes intervention under which pupils received daily deliveries of fruit and vegetables and were rewarded with stickers and small rewards for participation. At the end of the intervention, pupils were encouraged to bring in and eat fruit and vegetables from home as part of their daily diet.

We are very pleased to inform you that your child/children will have the opportunity to participate in the next phase of the programme this week. Under this phase, we will receive 5 days of fruit and vegetables – a “Food Dudes Week” – to help maintain the healthy eating ethos in the school.

Pupils in Junior Infants and pupils new to the school this academic year, will be provided with a reusable Food Dudes Lunchbox, to help encourage this healthy behaviour.

To support the school based activities that will be running alongside Food Dudes, your child will be given a Passport to Healthy Eating. This passport contains a number of fun activities and is designed to be completed with you at home during the course of the Food Dudes week.

The completion of the passport by you and your child will further enhance the healthy eating ethos in school and at home.

Parent’s may wish to adjust the amount of food in your child’s lunchbox next week, to accommodate these additional foods.

We are looking forward to a great week ahead!

Our Budding Gardeners in our Junior Room

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our Junior Room pupils have been planting bulbs and working in our new greenhouse with Ms Nuzum and Melanie Byrne (parent of Ben/Sam).

Melanie has entered the school in the Woodies ‘Budding Gardeners Competition’ which gives the school the chance of winning a garden makeover of 2,500 euro and lots of other prizes.

Melanie has submitted the 1st part of the competition. See below our certificate to confirm the 1st task has been completed.

The children are loving being outside and getting to take part.

Thank you to Melanie for taking the time to work with the children and to Thomas and Fiach for getting our greenhouse ready for lots of work ahead for the Spring and Summer months.

Dale Treadwell visit to Scoil San Eoin 22.02.2022

Dear Parent/Guardians,

Yesterday 22.02.22 we had a full day workshop with Dale Treadwell from Hertiage Ireland.

The children in our Junior Room had a very busy day.

They got to listen to a lovely Hedgehog story, and spent some time examining woodlice, ladybird, centipede and spiders through lenses which was super interesting for them to see.

They Listened to the story Patricia The Planted Butter Fly written by Dale who gave the workshop and learned about dinosaurs and saw lots of interesting artifacts, bones and teeth

They played lots of games outside in a circle and got to plant wildflower seeds at the bank outside of their classroom. The pupils also planted a Tree (Mountain Ash) over by the corner of the pitch. This will be such a lovely memory for the children and they will get to watch what they have planted develop and grow.

All the children in the Junior Room finished the day with artwork on drawing dinosaurs and using playdough to make one.

Overall everyone had a super interesting and exciting day and I am sure there were lots of lovely stories for parents afterwards.

Thank you to Dale for visiting us at Scoil San Eoin

In the Senior Room they made a bug hotel, learned about echo location and had to work together as a team to put together a geometric dome. It was tougher than it looked and they learned some engineering skills and some skills about job delegation and patience!!

December in the Junior Room

The junior room children have been very busy in the month of December and the lead up to Christmas. Our theme for the month was Winter where we talked about Winter weather, Winter clothes and some animals associated with Winter such as the Penguin and the Irish Seal. In Gaeilge we covered An Aimsir learning lots of new vocabulary about Winter weather.

In the run up to another COVID Christmas we unfortunately were unable to have any visitors to the school or any outside trips but we made the best we could of this situation with lots of arts and crafts activities and of course plenty of practise for our classroom concert - we hope you all enjoyed this video posted on seesaw! Take a look at all the lovely work the children have completed and we hope their log decorations will bring joy to all households for many years. Nollaig Shona daoibh go léir!

Junior Room Tennis with the Jamie Stafford Academy

The children from the Junior Room class have just finished up a 4 week block of Tennis with Jamie Stafford. They all thoroughly enjoyed it and some were lucky enough to receive prizes each week during games.

Lots of fun & exercise have been achieved for the sessions completed.

Thank you to Jamie from the Academy!!

Sponsored Cycle Event - Thurs 22nd Oct 2021

Our annual school Halloween Sponsored Cycle took place on Thurs 21st Oct. We were so fortunate with the weather after a wet start to the week but on the day it turned out to be glorious and we had some fabulous sunshine ensuring that the cycle would be a great day ahead!

Our pupils from our Junior Room brought scooters/bikes and scooted/cycled around the school yard. They also completed a sponsored walk to Cullen Park and were very lucky to fit in some play time in the park area as well.

Our pupils from the Senior Room had the very serious task of cycling 7k to Ballykane. Everyone with this group also got some much rewarded time in the park also after all their hard work. The children well and truly proved that we are a very active school and faced the task of a long cycle head on!

Everyone headed back to the school then for some much needed refreshments and Halloween treat bags!

The day was a fantastic success achieved only by the help and volunteering of our parents who were road marshals, who cycled alongside our pupils, who walked and supervised our smaller pupils and who volunteered afterwards to provide refreshments. Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, we couldn’t of done it without you.

Thank you also to our parent reps who helped in organising the event and provided the treat bags for our pupils.

Covid19 has hugely impacted fun events and parental involvement in schools and for this reason it was so lovely to have everyone together outside safely and for the children also to enjoy being active!

We are still awaiting all sponsor cards to be returned to the school but once we have a final figure we will let parents know!

Again thank you to everyone for all your help and a huge well done to all our pupils and teachers for taking part in the event.

Next week w/c 21st June 2021 which is our final week of school at Scoil San Eoin for term 20/21 will be activity week. We want to end the year on a positive for all the children. It will be an action packed week and there are lots of fun activities planned for each day such as a day of outdoor play with the outdoor toys, a mini sports day and also a fun day at River Valley Holiday Park for the whole school and lots more in between.

Our planned whole school trip to River Valley will be on Tuesday 22nd June. All classes will be attending . The current classroom pods will remain during the visit therefore all covid19 protocols will be adhered to.

All pupils will get to do 2 planned activities go-karting and crazy golf. We will also get the opportunity to use the lovely children’s park whilst there and the pupils will all get to play.

We are asking parents that they cover a fee of €6.00 towards the trip to River Valley. A link for this trip will be issued via Aladdin to all parents which will be payable by Monday 21st June.

As the children will be spending a lot of time outdoors next week please ensure they are wearing comfortable footwear and are dressed appropriately for the unpredictable weather in Ireland (ie) sunscreen and a sun hat if weather sunny/hot and a light raincoat if weather is damp. Please also give adequate drinks.

It’s looking like a fun week ahead!!

All our lovely vegetables are growing away and are already looking good enough to eat. We have a mixture of carrots, onions, lettuce and herbs. Our pupils are looking after them very well as you can see.

Our junior room have also been very busy little bees and have been planting sunflower seeds. They also have lots of vegetables and herbs that have started in cups and are now ready to move to our bedding trays when Mr Sunshine decides to come back to us.

Have a look at everyone’s hard work!

Lots happening in the month of April in the Junior Room!

Since we returned to school after the Easter holidays the children have completed lots of great work around our SESE theme of the month of Space. Everyone (including Ms. Fitzgerald) learned lots of new information about Space and I’m sure they will surprise you with their knowledge. We also spent time on the measures topic in Maths with lots of work done on Time and Money - 1st and 2nd class even set up a shop in the classroom for everyone to practise using coins. We also spent some time planting cress and sunflower seeds which we hope will continue to grow on our windowsill and eventually make it out to the school garden. We hope you enjoy looking through all our photographs.

Easter Egg Scramble!

Such a nice way to finish off before the Easter break! The boys and girls had great fun running around and finding all the Easter eggs that the Scoil San Eoin bunny had left around for them! Check out the video and pictures below!

November in the Junior Room

The children in the Junior Room have been working really hard in November and have covered lots of work.

We started off November with science week where the children completed several experiments like exploring loud and soft sounds by making shakers, looking at sound waves and how sound travels in our jumping rice experiment and just for fun we made cloud dough which smelled divine.

Several hands on topics were covered in Maths this month. The Junior and Senior Infants explored long/short, wide/narrow, tall/small etc. and had great fun with links particularly when making a long chain which stretched into the corridor. Shapes both 2D and 3D were explored by all classes which lended nicely to robots and rockets in artwork. The children in First and Second also worked on symmetry which was an enjoyable break from other maths work.

The children are really progressing in Gaeilge and spent the month of November learning all about Bia. They are now experts in how to make pancakes both in English and Irish. Games and interactive activities on the whiteboard in class are very popular, if at times competitive, with the children.

In English we read lots of nice stories including The Tiger Who Came To Tea and Tom’s Shoes. First and Second class wrote and typed their very own recounts, adding pictures and working on changing fonts, colours etc.

During the month of November we studied Sound in depth in SESE. While learning about Alexander Graham Bell the children discovered an interesting fact that he also invented the metal detector. The children tried their best to find some treasure around the school grounds with a metal detector…..no success yet.

Throughout the month the children stayed active either completing go noodle daily or a run a day on our active walkway. Thankfully we have had very few wet days but on those lego has been the go to activity. As the month drew to a close the excitement was building for the Late Late Toy Show, Christmas decorating and opening Advent calendars. We are all looking forward to making the most of the lead up to Christmas in school and enjoying the infectious excitement of the children.

Scoil San Eoin Sponsored Halloween Cycle - 22nd Oct 2020

thank you.jpg
sponsered cycle.jpeg

We had our annual Halloween sponsored cycle on Thursday 22nd Oct 2020. Even with COVID19 Guidelines and rules in place, the day went ahead safely and was a great success! The skies were clear and the sun was shining to ensure that a great days cycling was had by all. Lots of brilliant parents came to help out on the day some cycled with the children, some parents drove in front and behind to make sure the pupils and parents were safe, others helped the younger pupils navigate their way around Cullen Park and to and from the school. The boys and girls had a fantastic day both on the 7k route and in Cullen Pk and they were very proud of their achievement. All of the benefits of extra cycling during lockdown and extra exercise programmes completed in school such as GAA/Hurling and rugby could really be seen across all classes and showed that we truly are an active school!!

Afterwards the children got to enjoy some well deserved treats and refreshments back at the school.

Thank you to all that sponsored the pupils and helped out on the day.

Cards are still being received but as soon as we have a total we will notify parents and post on our website. Again thank you, funds raised will towards much needed items for the school.

Well done all!
