Important Message from the Dept of Education to Parents!!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We have been asked by the Dept of Education and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland to assist in sending out a message through school communities to parents.

Please see below its warning about the danger associated with eating edible products, such as jelly sweets, containing cannabis components.

Warning regarding jelly sweets containing cannabis (THC)

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is urging parents and guardians to be extremely vigilant to the dangers of their children getting access to and eating confectionary, particularly jelly sweets, containing significant amounts of the psychoactive cannabis component called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This warning comes amid the ongoing seizures of these illegal food products by the Gardaí and Customs services, and a number of serious medical incidents whereby these THC-containing jelly sweets resulted in teenagers and young children suffering serious adverse health effects requiring hospitalization. These jelly sweets are packaged to look like popular brands of jellies and have been found to contain toxic amounts of THC (up to 50mg/jelly).  Depending on the concentration of THC, eating one of these jellies can  mean an equivalent intake of THC that is 5-10 times higher than that inhaled from a single cannabis cigarette. Also, unlike the almost immediate effects of inhaling THC (smoking or vaping), ingesting THC through these jellies can take up to 30 minutes for any effects to be felt. However, while waiting for those effects, those who have eaten these products may overdose in the mistaken belief that they need to eat more sweets in order to feel the effects. Of particular concern to the FSAI is the inadvertent consumption of these jelly sweets by small children who may somehow gain access to what looks and possibly tastes like ordinary sweets. Unfortunately, given access to a bag of these jellies, children will rarely eat just one and therefore, overdosing is a very likely outcome as witnessed by the hospitalisation of a number of seriously ill young children in the early part of 2021.

The FSAI has become aware of reports about the availability of THC-containing jelly sweets in schools in Ireland and therefore, parents and guardians are asked to speak with their teenagers alerting them to the dangers if they eat them or if their younger siblings get access to them and subsequently suffer the serious consequences of consuming a toxic substance.

Sponsored Cycle Event - Thurs 22nd Oct 2021

Our annual school Halloween Sponsored Cycle took place on Thurs 21st Oct. We were so fortunate with the weather after a wet start to the week but on the day it turned out to be glorious and we had some fabulous sunshine ensuring that the cycle would be a great day ahead!

Our pupils from our Junior Room brought scooters/bikes and scooted/cycled around the school yard. They also completed a sponsored walk to Cullen Park and were very lucky to fit in some play time in the park area as well.

Our pupils from the Senior Room had the very serious task of cycling 7k to Ballykane. Everyone with this group also got some much rewarded time in the park also after all their hard work. The children well and truly proved that we are a very active school and faced the task of a long cycle head on!

Everyone headed back to the school then for some much needed refreshments and Halloween treat bags!

The day was a fantastic success achieved only by the help and volunteering of our parents who were road marshals, who cycled alongside our pupils, who walked and supervised our smaller pupils and who volunteered afterwards to provide refreshments. Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, we couldn’t of done it without you.

Thank you also to our parent reps who helped in organising the event and provided the treat bags for our pupils.

Covid19 has hugely impacted fun events and parental involvement in schools and for this reason it was so lovely to have everyone together outside safely and for the children also to enjoy being active!

We are still awaiting all sponsor cards to be returned to the school but once we have a final figure we will let parents know!

Again thank you to everyone for all your help and a huge well done to all our pupils and teachers for taking part in the event.

October in the Junior Room

All our junior room pupils have had a lovely October in school, working hard on our theme of the month Autumn! We learned all about hedgehogs and squirrels and made some lovely Autumnal art pieces. The children began their tennis coaching with Jamie on Fridays to their great enjoyment and also continued GAA on Tuesdays with Philip. We have surely had an active month especially with our sponsored walk and cycle on Thursday 21st. It is lovely to see all our new pupils enjoying Scoil San Eoin and making lots of friends, everyone deserves a good rest over the midterm as we’ll have lots more work to get stuck into in November. Enjoy the selection of photographs from the past month and have a Happy Halloween!

Team Hope - Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are taking part in the Christmas Shoebox Appeal again this year where we encourage each child to fill a shoebox with items from a designated list for Christmas. These shoeboxes are then delivered to underprivileged children all over the world. These children may never have received a present before, or live in difficult situations where basic necessities are hard to come by. With Covid19, Team Hope have missed out on valuable donations from schools in the run up to Christmas for the past 2 years.

The benefits of the children being involved in this programme are getting to ‘‘feel good about doing something nice for others’’ and it can also help to teach your children about the world around them.

The deadline for drop off of the Christmas Shoeboxes for this year will be 08th November 2021. Please ensure that all shoeboxes have been brought to the school by this date.

A leaflet will be going home with the children today to include with your donation in your box. Please pop this in an envelope inside your box. There is also a label on this sheet for the outer top of the box.

Tips from Team Hope on how to fill the shoebox

Also see below some ideas on what you might fill your child’s shoebox with.

Thank You!

Hurling - Senior Room
