First Aid/DeFib training - Senior Pupils

On Thursday 30th April, our pupils from the senior room completed a First Aid and CPR workshop with Polly Nolan.

They learned what to do in the event of a person collapsing or choking. They learned the steps to complete in order to ensure the person is best looked after and that the outcome is a positive one. Firstly Polly spoke about the importance of staying calm and giving as much information as possible to the ambulance - knowing your home Eircode or telling them what you can see in the area if you are not at home. Then they moved into discussing how to keep themselves and others safe - no bunk beds in an ambulance! Then Polly took out her practise manikins and defib and the class talked through the relevant steps and does and don'ts of CPR and using a defib. It was amazing that each pupil got a hands on experience of compressions, team work, and allowing the defib to take you through the steps. They also got a great understanding of why CPR is used,  when it is not used, what defibulation is and why any CPR is better than none.

Finally Polly acted out a choking episode with the pupils and showed them what to do and also tips on what to do if you are alone at the time, and why not to move away from people if it happens.

This workshop really gave the children knowledge and confidence in what should be done if such a situation arises and an assurance that they are capable of taking on the responsibility of CPR and alerting the ambulance services as well as using a defib, even from this young age.

The pupils really enjoyed the experience and Polly very kindly shared some gifts with them  as mementos.

Well done to all the Senior room pupils on a great workshop!
